Anderson .Paak “JEWELZ” Track Review

Dom Maiorca

Following his two Grammy wins earlier this year for R&B Album (Ventura) and R&B Performance (“Come Home”), Anderson .Paak hasn’t stepped off the gas pedal.

At the height of the Black Lives Matter protests in April, Paak released the social justice anthem “Lockdown,” followed by collaborations with Rick Ross (“CUT EM IN”) and Busta Rhymes (“YUUUU”).  This week, .Paak returns with his latest single, “JEWELZ.”  The track has been highly anticipated by fans ever since. Paak and his son danced to the song on Instagram Live back in April.

A frequent collaborator with Dr. Dre, “JEWELZ” finds .Paak linking up with another legendary producer, Timbaland.  The track is a light-hearted dance groove perfect for an afternoon house party or getting ready for a night out.

With a crisp guitar riff and an almost irresistible rhythm section, this blast of funk-pop sees .Paak boasting with a fresh swagger, though he’s quick to mention that this isn’t even his final form.  “I ain’t even put my jewels on / I ain’t even play my latest, greatest song,” Paak sings in the chorus.

His voice is pitched up throughout the song, which may be a bit unfamiliar for some of his longtime listeners.  The pitch change adds to the overall playfulness of the song and shows. Paak isn’t afraid to switch up his style or try something new.  Even with four albums and three Grammys under his belt, the best is yet to come from Anderson.Paak.
