“star-crossed” Single Review

This past week Kacey Musgraves released the first single from her new era entitled “star-crossed.”

It has been three years since we have received a new album from the Grammy-winning country singer, and it is long overdue.

While Musgraves tends to include influences of pop in her music, this particular single is “poppier” than the entirety of her third studio album, Golden Hour, with an intense beat behind it that strays from her typical country twang.

This new single comes after Musgraves announced her divorce from Ruston Kelley in 2020, with the lyrics being indicative of someone in her situation. Musgraves sings “Let me set the scene / Two lovers ripped right at the seams / They woke up from the perfect dream / And then the darkness came / I signed the papers yesterday / You came and took your things away / And moved out of the home we made / And gave you back your name.”

The lyrics are harsh and scathing, reflective of the difficulty of her situation. If her upcoming album is anything like ‘star-crossed’ it is sure to be filled with heart-wrenching ballads of love and loss, and frankly, I am not ready.
